Delayed gear engagement?

Hey gang, I'm a new taco owner, when I put her in drive, there's a hesitation of about 5 seconds before the gear engages. If I accelerate before she's in gear she'll jump. Is this normal, or should I be patient, or concerned? Thanks in advance, Ken

Thats not normal at all. You can try a complete atf flush to see if it resolves this, or it just may need a new/rebuilt transmission.
The automatic transmission in my 2020 tacoma is buttery smooth...doesn't exhibit any of what you claim.
Btw, you didn't claim the trucks mileage. I don't care what the owners says when the atf should be change, but imo, you should do a drain, and refill before 60k miles.

Thank you Joel, truck has 160000, I've had her for about a year. I'll do a drain and refill, appreciate your advice

I don't think a simple drain, and refill is going to be enough, but you can try it. Just be sure to use the same atf brand thats already in there. Imo you need a complete flush of all the atf.
