The a/c on my fiancee car is broken and we have about a 5 hour trip ahead of us back to Vegas where it's still very warm so I was curious if having a broken a/c will affect the engine and cause it to overheat

As long as the compressor is spinning freely it will be fine.

Is there a way to check that

If you take the belt off of the ac and you can spin the pulley freely then it's fine

Or drive for a while then check it.
You will notice a huge power loss if it's sizing up. You will notice right away I would imagine..

The magnetic clutch on the compressor probably wouldn't be able to hang on if the compressor was seized. Just drive and don't push the AC button.
