2017 TRD Sport Engine Noise

Hey Taco friends!

First and foremost thanks for any help and advice in advance.

I recently bought a 2017 Taco TRD Sport and it eventually started making a loud rattling noise at the front part of the engine. I researched that the new Atkinson engine in the 3rd Gens. can be a bit louder and the fuel injectors could have a rattle here and there to clean the carbon deposits. Okay fine... So I left it at that, but as time progressed the rattling noise persists for over 15+ mins (I timed it). After a few little pumps on the gas, it goes away but eventually comes back. The noise persists in neutral, parked, drive, etc. Any ideas?

The video represents the rattling noise at the first part of the video, I pause the video and pump the gas and the second part of the video (14 secs) the truck is without overly loud rattling noise(s).


Any help will be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like the Atkinson cycle motor to me. Mine sounds the same until warm up. It is a little loud but it may be where the video is taken in the engine compartment.
If it’s bothersome you can take it to the dealership or a reputable shop that you trust. It shouldn’t cost anything for an experienced Toyota tech to take a listen. And it should be under warranty till 60k unless you have an extended warranty.

Thank you! I want to believe that it's just normal rattling but... I might take your advice and take it to the dealer.

It is a little loud but I figured it was because the video is taken in the engine compartment. It almost sounds like the valves but if there’s no power loss or other symptoms of engine failure or trouble it’s hard to say off hand.
Of course the causes come to mind of: bad gas, low oil, wrong oil concentration, incorrect timing, etc.
A truck that new shouldn’t have any of those issues minus the possibility of bad gas causing incorrect air/fuel mixture. Plus it’s the Atkinson cycle that sounds like a rattle trap up close anyway.
Either way it’s best for the dealer (warranty) to diagnose so if there is an ongoing issue it will be well documented (like your poor white Taco).

I guess it would be good to know how many miles are on it. Maybe after 7500 miles it starts sounding more like that and by 20k it’s chitty banging down the road.
 
So sounds like it was used when you bought it? Either way, does it have the OEM grille? Many (like myself) replace the grille with TRD Pro grille or something else. It sounds like maybe there's a chance something wasn't connected correctly or came loose? Maybe not but if I was experiencing the same thing you are, it'd be the first thing I'd check into, mainly because it sounds like coming from front of the engine. Worth a shot.
If you can have someone else rev the engine up and down while you're in front hopefully you could zero in on the precise location of the sound.

Sounds like Toyota forgot to put main bearings in it! [emoji23] Mine doesn't sound like that either. I hear an occasional ticking but it goes away quickly.
 
Oh just realized there's a video. Yeah that's not the grille, disregard my previous post haha
I have a 2017 TRD Sport also, I'll try to get in close to confirm if similar sounds.

I have replaced the OEM grille with the TRD Pro Grille and had someone Rev the engine to see if the noise was from something loose in the grille portion no success, rattle sounds like it's coming from the front engine mainly. Thank you for the suggestion!

Atkinson. My '17 TRD Sport made in TX sounds the same. I'm at 7500km's and it's sounded like that since new.
 
Wait till rattling starts under the dash passenger side glove . Toyota dealer says we don’t here it . It’s continuously driving me mad it’s to the point I have considered getting rid off the truck

Have you looked behind the glovebox?
