Converted 7-pin to 4-pin tow harness

Toyota installs a 7-pin tow package socket. This is unreasonable for a Tacoma. Anything I tow has the standard 4-pin. I removed the harness, cut off the factory socket, and connected a new 4-pin.



Of course my new boat trailer came with a standard 5-pin. The 5th pin is not needed on this trailer, blue wire is for electric brake, but no adapter needed; it just hangs off. The trailer manufacturer suggested that I can cut it off with a hacksaw if it is bothersome.

You could have just bought an adapter.

I did. It melted down. That is when I discovered the weakest termination in the harness. My LED bar light failed, pulled a higher load (but not enough to open the fuse). The conversion was actually a process of troubleshooting. I ruled out the adapter and then the next weak connection exposed itself, the bar light wire.

What type of harness adapter did you use?...the one that melted. Im curious because I just got a hopkins multi-adapter(4-pin, 5-pin, and 6 prong) for mine. Worked so far with my 4pin camper trailer last weekend.

Well, only time will tell with mine i guess. I don't pull trailers often.
