Coolant Temperature Gauge out and need ideas

The temperature gauge is out on my 2002 Tacoma. Has anybody dealt with this and I am open to all possible solutions including aftermarket gauges, troubleshooting ideas, etc...

some run a scangauge tool for a more accurate temp reading + other readinds
i still need to dabble with one i have

Scangauge won't give anything if the temperature sensor is NG.

Suggest to start diagnosis at the sensor, then the wiring, then the gauge. The problem could be as simple as a broken wire or bad connection.

No reason to shed $$$$$ for a little $ fix.
