Hi all. I just came to own a 2014 Tacoma double cab TRD off-road. It came with after market XD-KCM wheels. Tire size is 275/65/18r. It's a bit of a loud ride (a low roar which I believe are the tires) with not much "pep" (compared to the cars i've owned). I've learned bigger wheels/ tires = more noise and less power. Anyway, school me on the good, the bad etc. with wheels/tires this large. What do I need to know?

Welcome to the forum.

Those tires aren't overly large. The tire tread will cause more noise if it's aggressive. Larger wheels just means less tire sidewall so more of the road imperfections will be transmitted to the truck itself.

Thanks! I live in Tucson, which has notoriously bad roads, and I definitely feel a difference compared to the old Subaru! But the truck feels really solid! I drove my dad's 84 4runner quite a bit and it had huge aftermarket tires as well. I'm just trying to learn what is normal vs what may indicate a problem. I'll be taking it off road soon!

Sounds like mud tires, rotate them often for less noise possibly.
As Nancy said, the tires are not that big.
Here's the comparison of the stock size and the size u have now.

I'm running 285/65X18 Nitto Terra Grappler 2 A/T tires and they are not loud at all. Definitely as others have said aggressive tread will make all the difference. But also check for wheel bearings as they can also cause a loud howling if dry or badly worn. Pics of your tires will help. Welcome to the forum.......PS, power and MPG will suck with oversized wheels and tires on any vehicle.
 
Thanks! So ya, they are pretty aggressive "mud" tires... Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. I'll post a picture soon (My HD camera makes them too large to load....) I really appreciate the input! The "howling" noise quietens the faster I go.....

Tracs are not muds. That's an all terrain.

They just have larger blocks and voids.... Yet siped and a harder compound. Sometimes called a "tweener".... It's in between... But the tire is specifically an all terrain

I have them and they are not very loud (subjectively of course)... Rotate them every 5k

Good info here.
Put some dirt miles on that ride and check in when you make it to Pinetop and want to hit some trails!

I like mine so far. They are a little louder than the KO2’s but quieter than the Nitto TG for sure.
 
Ok, so, second question. Seeing as how this is used, and I believe the previous owner did quite a bit of offroading, what would be some of the more common problems it may have as a result?. It drives straigt with no pull, no loud noises, but at low speeds she does feel a little "not so smooth" sort of like driving over a mini washboard. No grinding with brakes or anything. I'm taking it to the mechanic for a check up next week but I just want to try to learn what I can.

It’s probably the tires. My DuraTrac’s feel/sound the same at 5-20 mph especially on dry pavement, the faster I go the smoother and quieter they seem to get.
