I made a trip to WV from NJ just this past week. The same route to and from home, filled up at the same gas stations both ways, even waited for the same pumps. The payload in the truck was the same both ways.
On the way to WV I did not use the ECT button. Cruise control was used both ways, transmission is S6. Traffic was almost identical both ways, virtually none. All regular gas, tank filled on slow until the pump clicked off. No rounding up.
I filled up twice on the way to Charleston WV. The first fill up was at a Sunoco station, 18.16 mpg. Next was when I pulled into Charleston WV at a Marathon station, 19.12 mpg.
I filled up at the above Marathon station in Charleston before I left for home. Around town mileage with a lot of short trips was 11.00 mpg. Not surprised there.
On the return trip I used cruise and the ECT button.
First fill up gave me 18.07 mpg, which is .09 mpg lower than not using the ECT button. I would call that the same mileage.
My last fill up gave me a spectacular 26.5 mpg. An increase of 8.3 mpg over the same area when going to Charleston WV. I double checked the math, and that figure is accurate.
Something that I did notice is that my transmission DOES shift into S6 while using the ECT button. I verified this by downshifting into S5 and watched the revs climb, then drop to where they were when in S6.
Average mileage going to Charleston WV was 18.64 mgp. The return trip to Joisey the average mileage was 22.29 mpg.
When using the ECT in S6 I noticed that the transmission downshifted to only S5 on steep hills and upshifted sooner than not using the ECT.
Contrary to what Toyota says, at least my transmission will upshift into S6 when using the ECT.
All speed limits were observed, going both ways.
