I need some thought power or someone with personal experience. A short while back I was driving home from somewhere when I had an onset of a whistling sound in the last few miles home. It was quite loud and I could not figure it out. A while after getting home, the wife and I went out for a drive and the truck only did it for a short distance. No more whistling after that, but then the truck started sounding like it was rev'ing at about 2X the actual RPMs once you got past maybe 2,000 RPM. I checked the truck over and discovered some gear oil dripping from the transmission -- figured maybe the fluid had been leaking a while and the level had maybe dropped resulting in some foaming or something to account for the loud engine noise. I didn't have time to work on it myself due to an ongoing project, and I had a bit of a laundry list of items that needed some attention so I took it to the dealer. Bottom line, that did not resolve the issue. At first, the sound came and went mysteriously, now it is just always there. You can't hardly have a conversation or hear the radio if you are over about 2200 RPM. It is not related to speed but directly related to engine RPM. Tech from the dealer took it for a drive and surmised it was the clutch, possibly the pressure plate was slipping or something with the throw-out bearing. So, I had them change that out. At 220K miles, why not. Now the clutch is smooth, but the noise is still there. I figure it has to be a bearing somewhere that is roaring -- maybe input on transmission? As soon as you push the clutch in, the sound is gone. I have hardly driven the truck since this came up, I just don't trust it. I have been stranded in the middle of nowhere before and it is not a comfortable feeling (we have a lot of areas with no cell coverage). Any thoughts on potential trouble points, things to check, or similar experience?
