Suggestions for aftermarket diagnostic scanners?

I've wanted a serious one for a long period of time but now that I have the Gen3 I have to see what people might be using. There is no way I can shake $4k lose for one but I'm hoping I do not have to go that far.

Please let me know if you're able to refer me to something meaningful.
 
$4K would buy a number of trips to the dealer for diagnostic work.

The dealer will have the most up to date equipment. Now, if the techs know how to use it for diagnostic work......well that is a different issue.

Remember, you get what you pay for.
