2017 TRD OFF ROAD DC - Surging when coming to a stop

IMG_6970.jpgand this just happened. Coming to a stop behind a big work truck, braked, truck pulled forward, taco surged when started ease brake.

Now the headaches really begin. At least I have this post, posts from others, and the fact that I’ve told two different dealers. (sigh..)

How come when you start up the truck and your hand is not on the wheel yet, it jumps is that electric assist steering ?

Same here 2017 OR Double Cab also had a 2006 Tundra that was notorious for the same thing had to hold the brakes all the time.

I can make this very thing happen if I have to stop short because of some idiot with no brake lights or turn signals pulling a stunt in front of me. It seems like the transmission can't skip a gear in downshifting. It starts out in 28th speed, then 27th speed and down FINALLY to first. It won't go from 5th or 6th gear to 1st like a 'normal' transmission will do. If I stop a bit less severely, there is no problem, but I CAN feel each downshift as the transmission goes thru them.

With everything electrically controlled in the transmissions, it's probably a programming issue that the factory doesn't want to fess up to.

My truck is a 2018 off road long bed automatic V6

I always shift in s-mode ! Its funner to drive that way .my wife gets annoyed sometimes cuz I like shiftin' .oh well its my truck ! Ha !

If this is transmission related, have you guys checked your ATF level? I have a 2019 OR and mine was underfilled by 1/4 of a quart. After I filled it to a proper level all of the rough shifting and clunking went away. Toyota's notorious for shipping these trucks (probably other models too) with underfilled everything. My both differentials were underfilled by as much as 30% of the capacity. Dealers flat out refuse to check diffs and transmission levels during PDI. They say it takes too much time, even though they suppose to and check it off on the form as checked, f*%#&ing dealers. CHECK YOUR FLUIDS!

No_Pain, having trouble reading your attachments. I have a 2018 SR5 with the 6cyl. Purchased the end of 2018. It has about 600 miles on it. I noticed the idle surge when "carefully" entering garage. Like other say, it can be a surprise. What all did the dealership do, and did it correct. thanks

This TSB worked for my Tacomas surging issues. View attachment 25600

Some 2016-2017 model y-ar Tacoma vehicles equipped whh a 2GR-FKS engin. may exhibh
an engine idle surge with steering input. The surge is most noticeable under the
folk)wing candHions:
. The vehicle is operated at an idle creep speed.
. The steering wheel is turned (i.B., backing out of a garage ar executing parldng lot maneuvers).
. The engine coolant temperature is low.
Fallow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin ta address this condition.

After having the update done, I can say the issue has been about 99% fixed. And my truck actually feels pretty normal when I drop it into reverse.

I hope this info helps ya.

Thanks. I see this mentions only 16-17 model, but it's obviously happening on 18's. I'll ask the dealership about that TSB.
I actually found the TSB on my own from this website

http://m.carcomplaints.com

I've learned from going to multiple different dealerships that they will not do much if anything to help. I would also look into taking legal action. There are plenty of lawyers that specialize in lemon law claims.

Anyways, I’ve driven lots of vehicles on and off-road, and it feels like the truck tries to surge a little when I come to a stop. At first I thought maybe I wasn’t using the pedal enough, since it was brand new and I was taking it easy during the break in period. However, I definitely feel it. It’s as though it revs a little bit when you start coming to a stop.

TIA!
It must be an automatic transmission thing because I haven't noticed it, or I just don't sweat the small ****
