22r replacement carburetor

I am looking into getting a new carburetor for my 1988 22r pickup. The factory one has been giving me some trouble even after we rebuilt it. Sometimes it will flood the engine and other times it wont get much or any gas at all. Does anyone know a good quality carburetor that will be a direct fit for my truck and maybe some that might even gain a little power from? Anything helps.

Weber 32/36 makes a lot of people happy especially if you don’t have all the emissions garbage anymore. The stock carbs just don’t do well without everything from the factory still intact. Either way, the Weber carbs work great.

Well i haven't taken anything off of it besides when I replaced the gas tank on it. This truck has been in the family since it came off the lot. Im going to get off topic a little. Would you recommend me to take off the emissions equipment? Is that illegal? The time my grandad tried it on another truck it wouldnt even start or run so im not sure if its for me. Anyway thanks for the advice. Now back to finding carburetors

Emissions equipment depends on where you live. I wouldn’t “recommend” pulling anything off but sometimes sh!t happens. Put that Weber on and keep on truckin’!
 
Ok well thanks for the help. Is their anything else you would recommend doing to the truck after I get the carb problem solved? I was thinking maybe a set of headers and a new exhaust because the stock one has broke completely after the muffler and has some holes before the muffler. I have not checked before the cat but im sure it might have some small holes in it. Do you think I should do a header and new exhaust and what would you recommend
 
Hey crawdad or anyone else looking at this forum I have a few questions arrive while looking at the Weber 32/36. First of all how much does it need to be tuned? Do you notice a gain in power and/or fuel economy? And what else would I need to do this swap any extra equipment like fuel pressure regulators or anything else? This is not going to be a race truck but if I am having to do maintenance you mine as well upgrade at least that's my way of looking at it.
 
Just curious if you or someone you know has did this and what was the results and how do you like it

I haven’t had a 22r since my 1981 pu. It had the OEM carb on it. I’ve known guys who had the Weber and they said it ran better and felt like it had more power. I personally couldn’t tell you.
 
Ok well like I said this has been in the family since it came off the lot. My grandad had bought it and then my dad used it later but still is a single owner truck. The only things changed are the plugs plug wires gas tank and the starter. Its nice to actually know what really has been done to a vehicle. I want to keep it stock until the part quits working in this case the carburetor which has already been rebuilt so im just ready to find something that will work and give improvement to the truck.

That chain of ownership is awesome. Welcome to the forum.
It’s been years since I’ve tuned a carburetor, at least 5. And I haven’t ran one since 2002. It won’t be that bad to get tuned, a lot of people like the old Weber’s for a 22R.
I can’t attest to the gas mileage and power gains but you’ll no doubt see an improvement with a new carburetor.
At worst as far as adjustment it’ll be a little trial and error getting it right.
 
Yea I love the chain of ownership and we do all the work on the vehicles which makes it really nice to know it was all cared for properly. You dont see a whole bunch of these trucks driving around anymore in a near stock form they all seam to be having lifts put on them and big tires which is ok but its not my style especially with the history behind this one.
 
We went through and changed the plugs because at least one wasn't sparking but its a good project truck!
 
Yea it is i think it is going to be a really fun truck when it gets done. I spent hours just cleaning the valve cover and what I could get of the engine and washed this truck and a 2011 Tacoma. It was definitely worth the time to see it this way. Maybe soon I can get a few more pictures if you guys would like. Its nothing much but its all I need.
 
So I have one more question which might be really stupid but could I use the stock cold air intake that came with the truck? If I convert to just the filter it would be sucking in hot air which probably would have little to no benefit I would think i might be wrong. If any of you have done it please tell me how and your results I would rather do it right the first time.

Use the stock intake for what? I’d just leave the box and filter the way it is. Replacing it with an open filter like a K&N isn’t going to do anything for you. If that’s what you’re asking. Not really sure I understand your question. ^
