Argh!

I guess it's a 2nd/3rd gen thing, if I turn key to "on" position you clearly hear the pump until the fuel rail is charged/pressurized, then cuts out as should...
That’s what I’m used to also. I assumed all vehicles did the same.

sure thats not the evap pump?
People always think they hear the fuel pump come on when the newer 2nd and 3rd gens do their self diagnostics (as in no key at all, 4hrs after the truck was last shut off)... sounds like a fuel pump, I agree.
but schematics show it cannot be

even on 1st gens, Gadget says nope.

No, the pump does not prime.

The ECU will command the pump to start only when it sees and RPM signal coming in from the engine. That is why it starts and builds pressure when cranking.

unless my reading of the FSM is wrong, Gidget is wrong, and these fellers is wrong?

Id like to know what that sound is tho, it sounds alot like a fuel pump.
But again, even the tech I worked with said not to bother trying to prime, as the pump will not prime with key to "on"

and ya know, it did take a few seconds to startup after my fuel pump upgrade to the walbro

I knew what the evap pump 4 hours after shut off was. Years ago I had to look it up when I heard that for the first time.

Well then, what the **** is it ? My 2000 did it, my 2004 does it, every 1st gen I've started did it too. There's nothing wrong with my truck , at least no codes thrown , is it the ABS pump ???

If we're wrong then tell us what it is...

I want to hear it from you guys I'm not reading all that ****....haha

Hahaha. At least you tell the truth that you aren’t reading all that.

Have u disconnected the line and seen fuel pump out?
Im taking a schematics route, and a technicians word over "sounds like", sorry.

Ive given all the info i care to look for and im not renewing my license to spoon feed and diagnose ppl this year. Saves me a few hundred bucks, so ur gunna have to read the info or not on ur own.

Maybe print out a schematic and eat it... osmosis?

That's fine, & ummmm, it's my understanding that the fuel rail is under pressure (even when motors off) & disconnecting it would result in an 87oct shower is this not the case ? ( I mean I don't know , I'm asking)

& I respect mr gadjet knowledge most the time , & I don't declare "sounds" to be fact but it is a starting point for understanding/diagnosing etc; It's 1 of our 5 senses (6 for some of us) so I use it like a tool, then I touch it, I smell it, & if the mood is right I'll get on down & taste it ....

(that sounded really wrong )

Yes its under pressure.... but once relieved , wouldnt this test show if the fuel pump indeed does prime without crank sensor input (despite saying otherwise in the document)?
