Auto Writers Gush Over New Ford Ranger

Well the new Ranger is out and the automotive press is hyper ventilating. About what exactly? Am I the only one who is shocked at the dated, plain, pedestrian styling? Hearing quotes like "Ford Raises the Bar Too High", "The Ranger Wallops the Competition", "Ranger gives leader Tacoma a Beatdown", "A Whole New Ballgame"...and watched a couple of Fast Lane Truck vids and this is it? This is what Ford loyalists have been waiting 4 years for? With the circa 80's melted look and essentially a warmed over global version of what the rest of the civilized world already has with required U.S. safety requirement features and interior appointments sought after by the American market, why the excitement? Is it the cheap, generic hard plastic interior? Is it the 23 MPG combined? Or is it the high price and the small center console? The slam-down tailgate? Or the little infotainment screen? The elimination of the manual? The one engine 2.3 Ecoboost? The thin paint and crude metalwork? Sorry, I just don't get it.

After seeing all of this marketing drama unfold over the last few weeks, I appreciate my Tacoma that much more. Maybe Nissan's worried but I suspect the boys and girls over at Toyota are smiling.

Ch#vy Colorado is just dead truck walking. They can’t give them away here even with heavy incentives. Didn’t even know kissing cousin GMC made one.
Eco-boost in the spousal unit’s Edge is cool and it’s ok for a city dweller like me, but I don’t see it as a trail (8.9” ground clearance?!?!) or trailer warrior.
They even stamped the name in the tailgate. [emoji849]
If you wanted a Tacoma, buy a frigging Tacoma!

One of my good friends back home is a Ranger fanboy... I've been watching all the TFLTruck vids and others too. I feel like it's a little 'meh' relative to all of the hype that was built for it. I think it'll be a good truck but I also think they might be jumping the gun with all the 'knocks' on other makes. I agree with @Bogunn though that I hope it makes Toyota work harder on the next Tacoma.

I had a 98 B4000 (ranger) 4x4. With t bar cranked, better rear spring pack, and a/t's, it did really well with the 4.0. Got thru a foot of Mich snow, no problem. I hate the ecoboost, dislike the new styling. I have a feeling the Bronco will be crap also, which sucks, I kinda want one.

I had a 97 tacoma 2wd that had 300k the thing ran like a swiss watch. Just brakes and tires traded it for an 11’ sr5 2wd access cab it was perfect over 130k on it I gave to my son when I bought an 18’ sr5 4dr4wd in may. Love them all. All great trucks. Tacomas out last every other brand. I’ll stick with them

Tacoma owner of almost 2 years. Love my truck.

I do like Ford in general. Originally planned to get the Ranger but no one would give me a release date. (See paragraph above)

As far as the 4 cylinder eco boost, I rented a Mustang with that engine for a week. It's a bullet. Engine is a proven component.

Now... my question would be how is it geared and programmed for truck applications?

No regrets owning the Tacoma.

Release date on the ranger is around as early as January but late as April. Ford isnt making a ranger raptor or a diesel ranger. To me the Tacoma still takes the cake on looks and resale value. The biggest problem ford made was not put a brake controller etc... on the ford for towing which was utterly retarded. So Californians cant tow over 1500 and colorado and certain other states no more than 3000. Lmao ford....good job

Its gears with 3:73 rear end and a 10 speed with rear lockers.

Lots of issues with the 10 speed auto. Traded my 3.5 eco after loads of problems. Turbo failure, iac condensation problems, ignition problems. Ate lots of spark plugs. 3 sets in 30k. Left me stranded on freeway twice. Died while merging. Kept going into limp mode. Fathers 18 mustang gt has trans issues. Brother in laws 18 f150 in shop now, no oil pressure. No eco for me. Here is the kicker: we were Ford dealers since 1955! Drove my mother to FL in her new Nautilus, nice suv, but I hope it lasts. She leased it.
