Back to a Tacoma maybe

In 2008 I bought a brand new Tacoma 4x4 with a manual transmission and I loved the truck. Long story short, I had to get rid of it. Right now I have a Ram 1500 which has been a great truck for me. I'm thinking of getting a Tacoma again but haven't followed them in years. I'd be buying a used one. Probably couple years old. How are the manual transmissions these days? Which package gives you the most bang for your buck? Thanks for the info!

I guess I'd ask why you got rid of your 2008 before I'd recommend a newer manual or automatic tranny model. They've made the new Automatics to give you the option of working it as a manual transmission. A lot depends upon how you would use the truck and what your needs really are.

I can tell you having a tundra for years, and going back to a new mid-size tacoma was a bit of getting use to, mainly for the tundra having a full size bed, and a much more compliant ride. For me off-roading is not a major concern, just need a decent 4wd truck for icy/snowy roads. I always owned toyota sr5 4wd pickups since the 80's till buying a 2001 sr5 tundra which i really liked. Now have a 2020 sr5 access cab. I feel it was the best option with the technology i wanted. I almost bought an sr, but it didn't come with everything i hoped for. I've gotten use to the tacoma now and its been a great little truck.
As far as bang for the buck, really depends what options, or technology you want in these trucks. Many buy the trd off-road, for a bit more than the sr, or sr5 then never used what the truck has, or complain the trd or has gremlins. I can only claim i've had nearly 0 issues owning sr5's feeling they have been more reliable.
 
My '16 taco is almost the exact size of my '03 tundra long bed extra cab .its like 2 inches skinnier and my long bed 4 door cab is about an inch shorter .the hood did drop off more on the tundra , but there was no skewp to look over !

My 2020 taco is roughly the same length as the 2001 tundra i had, except the tundra was about 2'' taller off the ground, and noticeably had a wider wheel base that road much smoother. Taco has way less roll through the corners when on back roads. I'd have to say the the 4.7 tundra v8 was nicer to have other than its poor fuel economy for a truck that weighed a few hundred lbs. more. I love the 6 spd auto in this tacoma, it works so smoothly keeping engine rpm low for good fuel mileage. At a 45-50 mph roll-on, this v6 taco will smoke my old tundra's v8.
 
As close as the dimensions are between the 1st Gen Tundra and the 3rd Gen Tacoma it still feels much smaller. I still miss my Tundra but don't miss the fuel economy.

I also think they could have made it so 4x Sheet goods could fit between the wheel wells of the 3rd gen
 
True but there's no replacement for displacement! I do wish they could put a 4.7 in a taco with the 6 speed i bet the gas mph would be close .the Hp is close but the torque in the tundra was nice for pulling my boat:)
 
I really didn't have an issue pulling my 2k lb boat this season as everyone said i would with this taco. Just locked out 6th gear and used the ECT mode. I still averaged 18 mpg. With the tundra just slap it in drive and go. The tundra seemed happy all the time, except at the gas pumps getting a bit better than 14 mpg while pulling the same load. Now that i've piled on a few thousand miles, i've gotten use to this tacoma enough by working around its short comings that i no longer miss the tundra.

I haven't seen those trucks around in my area for quite awhile. Last one seen had to be a few years ago barely recognizable with all the rust and corrosion on it. The roads here in the winter were not kind to the t-100.

I have a really basic 17 sport with 3 pedals and love it!
I had a 2010 6 spd manual before this one and I like the ratio spread in this transmission a lot better. The 3rd gen manuals also come stock with 4.30 gears. I recently swapped out to 4.88's and ARB's in front and rear. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106] Highly recommended!!! It's also Orange Virus tuned and has a 2" Toytec Boss lift with Dakar rear springs and 34" Ridge grapplers.
I got the cheapest stick I could find and made what I wanted out of it. And I love it! But the list is neverending! Lol
