I have a 16 ORDC with 3”/1” lift and 285/70/17 tires.
Recently I have had 6 brake override errors over the last 3 months. My dealer was baffled since I was not part of any recall and they could not duplicate the error since has been intermittent. After further inspection they said it was likely due to a hypertech chip used to recalibrate the speedo. They said it was dangling and possibly bouncing around behind the dash causing this error somehow. I bought my truck from a CA dealer with the lift/tires/wheels already done. Apparently they added the hypertech chip as well. I’ve seen many Tacoma’s on dealer lots already done up like mine so I don’t think it is all that uncommon. I never asked about speedo calibration as I should have or I would have known about this. The selling dealer uses DSI (4wheel parts) for these dealer sold lifted trucks so they are not actually doing the installs.
My current dealer recommends removing this chip and seeing if the errors stop. The error is the same one that causes some trucks to shut down to limp mode so I am concerned and want this fixed.
For the record I only have seen this error while parked after starting. I then shut the truck off and restart then a few seconds of rough idle then all is good for a while.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Anyone using the hypertech speedo recalibrator? I guess it is plausible this could be the cause but I am not sold since I have had the tranny issue, diff leak and still have anomalies with my transmission like others. I figured this was the crank shaft sensor since it idles rough each time I restart after the error. Any thoughts?
Just wanted to share my experience. I pick the truck up tomorrow so we’ll see.
