Clear plastic over gauge cluster scratches. Looks like crap after first time detailing.

IMG_0784.JPG IMG_0786.JPG Just wiped down the clear plastic over the gauge cluster with a micro fiber cloth that's super soft and now the clear plastic gauge cluster looks like ****! Fine scratches everywhere!! Anyone else?? If this is how it looks after one time wiping it down I can't imagine how bad it's going to look after 10 years of keeping it clean. Do they expect us to never detail the inside of the truck.
 
Was your MF cloth dry? You need some kind of lubricant or else dust and debris are going to scratch. PlastX should correct your scratches.
 
By the way, a small California Duster is probably the best thing for dusting the interior. You can use them dry without scratching.
 
The MF cloth I was using is an interior automotive detailing cleaning cloth made to use dry. I've used it in my tundra, outback and my WRX with no issues no scratching like this. I ordered some plastX. I have a California duster as well. Regardless of what was used the plastic should not scratch that easy. I should be able to wipe it down with a dry paper towel or my T-shirt and not worry about scratching. I guess I'm going to have to treat it like it's a delicate lady part. Oh Tacorna how I love thee. :rolleyes:
 
I'm sure the plastic in your other vehicles is no different than what is in Tacomas. The only thing that could have scratched it is abrasive material being dragged across it, especially if too much pressure is applied. Even a MF detailing cloth has to be used lightly. A dry paper towel or t-shirt will definitely scratch your plastic.

l don't think a chisel would scratch plastic that bad. I don't know wtf happened here, but a mf cloth covered in carborundum paste would have done less damage.
 
Again it should not matter what you use to clean the dash or plastic cover with. MF cloth, cali duster, baby wipe, towel, T-shirt, dirty sock... I have a cell phone that is years older then this truck and it's screen has less scratches. I touch, swipe and rub it constantly. It's in and out of my pocket all day everyday. There are lots of cheap materials that can be used that will stand the test of time.

They didn't say. I was just there today. I'm sure a few days. They have been pretty fast at getting parts so far.
Was yours scratched up too? Why are you replacing yours?

Faulty RPM gauge. Wasn't sweeping clean. Would kinda stagger up and down. And In the pic my truck was off and rpm gauge wouldn't go to 0. That happened about 5 times. Only had the truck for a month. ImageUploadedByTaco Forum1496965112.815059.jpg

That sucks. Mine is just the clear plastic cover not the gauges them selves. I don't know how long the actual gauges would take to get.
 
I have the same experience. I was careful and used a soft cloth. I started to think it was the detail kid at Toyota from the original delivery. I only had dust from its first 1000 miles. Wierd. Really look bad in some light. Other light it is less noticeable.
