Cool phone holder

Are magnets ok for a phone? I jacked up my monitor at work with magnets. Rare earth magnets

I’m know scientist I’m just asking. Wasn’t sure if it would mess up the phone or the screen in the truck

No. I’ve used them before. I guess if you have something like a pacemaker magnet or stronger it’ll be potentially bad but for a case it’s fine.

The only issue I found with this is...with the magnet in the case, the rapid charger (stand) wont charge the phone. Obviously, the plug in still works. It somehow blocks it.

I had that issue when I first got the iPhone 8. I used a waterproof case with a metal plate in it for the magnet holder. That doesn’t work out with wireless charging....

Also, I’ve never had any issues otherwise with any cases and wireless charging. Otter boxes or Pelican cases. Even though their thick.

This is my favorite setup. I have the 67 designs phone mount with carbon arm, it works so flawlessly and it is mounted on the Expedition essentials TPAM setup, it has a Blue-sea 4.8amp dual USB charging port in the middle and lots of mounting holes for other mounts and CB

...and is $90.

I'm not saying it's not a solid product, ExpeditionEssentials makes great stuff, but IMO they're charging way more than they should, just because they know no one else has such a mounting platform. Although, as a heads up for everyone looking for a similar mounting option, another option is this more minimalistic design: https://www.ballsoutoffroad.com/product-page/3rd-gen-tacoma-accessory-mount

I like that design a lot, and it uses same screw holes so all RAM mounts/etc will fit it. That one is $60 + $10 shipping, but the creator gave me coupon code TW10 for $10 off. I might end up going with that, although I think even that is overpriced as well IMO. I know a lot of design and by-hand work went into it, but it is essentially a long, narrow piece of aluminum milled by a machine, the edges sanded, and some screw holes tapped. I'd pay $30 for it right now, maybe $40. But $60 seems like so much for a small piece of aluminum. Sorry for the rant, but to prove my point, you can get a 3ft x 1.25in aluminum flat bar at Lowes for $5:

If I had access to milling capabilities to grind down the edge nicely to match that little gap on top of the dash area, I'd try a DIY project and post the tutorial online.

Oh also, as for concern of magnet mounts and phones, I have an identical magnet mount that attaches to my vent. The magnet is attached to the dash or vent...the thing you put in or on your phone case is just a small piece of metal. Once the metal is on the back of your phone or case, it will stick to the magnet mount. Because magnets.

This is what I currently have, but there are tons just like it out there, just Google "magnet vent mount".

I don't recommend that specific model though because the rubber starts to wear away from the "pinchers" that go into the vent. And then they don't hold as nicely and now sometimes when I pull my phone off the whole mount comes out of the vent.

Going to try something that clamps down on the vent instead (until I finally decide how I want to permanently mount to dash above vent...maybe with one of the unique platforms above...or a DIY solution).

Forgot about this thread. If anyone's interested, I've since made my own dash mount for about...$12 in materials I think? It's super solid and I love it. Decided to use steel rather than aluminum for sturdiness. Aluminum probably would have worked fine, but I like knowing that I have steel there in case I decide to mount something really heavy. I still use a magnet mount for my phone so I can mount and unmount super fast (it doesn't budge). I plan to use a proper tablet mount in the center above my stereo touchscreen, just don't have it mounted yet. Although given how solid the single magnet mount is for my phone, I might just try a double magnet mount for my tablet so I can mount and unmount that quickly as well. You can't see the dash mount at all when driving or riding passenger, unless you lean forward and look in that gap in the dash. IMG_20181101_081814.jpegIMG_20181101_081913.jpeg
Oh, an added bonus; I tapped/threaded the holes with 1/4-20 size threads, which is what nearly all camera mounts use, as well as the majority of RAM mounts and others. I noticed a similar dash mount for sale online that uses a specific size, almost forcing you to buy their proprietary mounts from their site to go with it. And for some random reason, they seem to overcharge for those mounts. Go figure...

I still need to write up the tutorial, I have pics if the entire DIY process. It was a step above beginner difficulty, but mostly just because of the powertools used. If you can use a jigsaw or a bandsaw (you can, trust me) then you can do this yourself. If anyone's interested, I'll try to remember to link to the tutorial once I finish writing it up.
