Crawl Control

Just got my 2016 Taco TRD Off-Road and tried Crawl Control tonight on my LEVEL long gravel driveway. In the lowest setting it made some noises that were somewhat alarming and the truck seemed to lunge back and forth. I was afraid I was going to break something so I turned it OFF. The tried upping the setting to 2 or 3 and it smoothed out and crawled fine. Still made some noise at first but subsided. On the lowest setting however, it made me feel as if I was going to screw up the tranny. I'll probably consult the dealer and watch the videos available. Please share the knowledge!

If you read the manual I believe it says some noise is normal. I don't know about the lunging though.

It's totally normal man. It's noisy and nasty and lunges like crazy. All normal. If your crawling up or down something serious, the lunging isn't really there because of all the weight it's moving.
The noise and lunging are due to the automatic acceleration and braking and then the electronic cut out of both.

OK thanks for the advice. I did read the manual for Crawl Control but it should say something more like.... "Don't be alarmed by the grinding clacking lunging racket this thing makes"

:)

I am a new member with a new 2017 tacoma TRD off road. I am happy to be part of this community. With that in mind, I tried my craw control. Activated crawl control as directed, took my foot off the brake and proceeded to crawl up the hill. I immediately heard this rattling and ticking noise as the truck began to crawl up the hill. The sound was loud and basically awful. Is this normal? Also, upon reaching the top of the hill, as I went down in crawl mode, the sound was very apparent making this rattling and ticking noise. The crawl worked as stated in the manual. But the manual does not say anything about that loud noise with crawl activated and going up and down hills. Again, is this normal or should I be concerned? I am hoping that all of you expert tacoma owners might know the answers.

Normal noises as stated before. It's your ABS pump firing off as it controls each wheel individually. The 09 to 15 offroads made the same noise while using ATRAC.

So that awful noise is normal!! Hard to believe but the members of this forum seem to be very knowledgeable. Why does not the manual discuss this noise when using crawl to alert the owner? Not nice of Toyota.

That is a very useful option. On long declines it holds you down to 5mph. Applies brakes as needed.

My 2010 has it. It's called DAC (Downhill Assist Control) though. I never use it though because the speed is a little too fast even at 5mph.
Hello again and thanks for your response. So on your 2010, you also experienced that sound I am describing when in DAC and going up and down hills?
