Deal or no deal?

Okay Tacoma owners, this is why i joined the forum. Your opinions matter!

So I've always wanted a Tacoma but was never allowed the chance to buy for myself. Born into Ford and Chevy family. Been looking at spankin new Tacomas. A new TRD would be nice but the price tag scares me. Used in good shape is an option, so that i can afford to bling it out to my liking.

Found one on the market for $24,299. Its a 2015 Tacoma double cab, 4WD 5ft SB (4.0L 6cyl 6M) with 72k mileage. Built with the TRD sport pkg and V6 tow pkg, comes with shell. Not my color choice, but i can live with it. Its had two owners in the past. Is that a red flag? Is mileage too high? It has a few little dingers but i'm okay with that. I've been looking for a manual, double cab, 4wd, with a shell. Tires and wheels definitely need an upgrade. Thoughts?

I cant load a pic for some reason.

Thanks!

Dealership is 2.5 hours away and dont want to make the trip if more cons than pros.

I can't answer definitively on all of your questions.
But remember asking price is just that, asking only.
Lowball them and negotiate up from there if you do decide to go for it.
And no i don't see two owners as a red flag, two owners in 5 years is nothing. Many people, me included don't keep our trucks very long.

The 2015 sold new for roughly $35K.......I will seriously consider a used or a trade in if I can get .20/mile depreciation. 72K miles would come to $14,400 off new original price......$24K is too high IMHO.......like BC said, it's an asking price. If you're interested in it.....low-ball them to $21K and go for it!

You're more generous than I am lol.
I would offer 15k and possibly go up to 20k in the end if I really like it.

I always plug the data into Kelly Bluebook and see what she says trade-in value is. KBB.com says this truck (if it's a TRD Pro) has a trade in value of 18k to 21k. Offer him high trade-in and go from there. Private party high value is $22,940.

Thanks Tooter! Right back at ya.

Tooter when buying a Tacoma remember they have one of the highest resale value. That price does sound high but I bet it sales for close to that. I bought a brand new Tacoma for 35k and a used one 2 years old around 50kmiles on it was 29k. I was there on a Saturday picked mine up Wednesday and the used one was sold 28,200.00 is what they told me they got for it. So if you want the used one I would try to deal with them. If not wait and see if you can find a deal. I’m in Arkansas so there aren’t near as many used tacos around here as other brands . It’s 60 miles to a dealership

good point. thank you, sir [emoji4]

If you drive and like it I would make a reasonable offer of $20K and make sure you point out all the shortcomings (dings, scratches, high miles, not the color you wanted, etc). Also explain you have a tight budget so you are firm on price and you know where another truck is for that price that is similar to the one at the dealer. Try discussing with the manager and stay away from sales people.

YIKES!

22940 seems really high.
20k I can see.
Dealers always ask way way more than they expect to actually sell for.
When I sold cars long ago, I was almost hurt when a customer came in and didn't want to negotiate much off. Had a woman ask for only 1k off a new car, and cars were a lot cheaper back then.
I had nothing to negotiate, just gave her the 1k off.
I wish she had started at half MSRP and then we got to negotiate up to a selling price.

me thinks i will hold off on this used taco, although its super tempting, and hold out for the 2021 nightshade. im in lust with it. thanks guys for chiming in. i appreciate your knowledge. :)

I'm a new member, but have owned toyota trucks since 96. Currently on my 2nd taco. 2011 Access Cab trd tx pro series. Just under 97,000. KBB says it's worth 16.9K I believe it's valued at "very good". I'm down here in NM. Does anyone have any interest. I'm asking 16.5K.

Let me give you a perspective from someone that has owned 6 Toyota trucks. Take it for what it's worth. 1st thought is to keep looking. 2nd thought is do not but a 3rd gen with an automatic transmission. I currently own a 2008 Off Road and a 2012 SR5. I sold my 2016 and bought these. Prices are just ridiculous now and that can't really be helped however there are deals out there to be found. Patience is key. Personally I will never buy another 3rd gen with a 3.5 and/or the automatic transmission. I bought a new 2016 Sport access cab and I really loved the truck. It was not built with the same quality as the 2nd gens. I had that one 5.5 years and sold it with 25k miles. The transmission downright sucked and the 3.5, as factory tuned, was a slug. After adding a cold air intake and a better flowing exhaust it ran a little better. For me I got weary of the recalls and tsb's on the truck. Every time I turned around there was something else the dealer wanted to check. I also had the transmission flashed 3 times and it wasn't one of the bad ones. The only things I liked about the 3rd gen was the updated tech, the appearance and the killer gas mileage. What you lose in mpg on a 2nd gen you gain in spg (smiles per gallon). The 4.0 engine is a much better proven engine. Why do you think they still use it in American 4runners and international FJ Cruisers. As far as tech you can add every feature of a 3rd gen to a 2nd gen. The truck you are asking about is a fair deal at $20k with the mileage. I bought my 08 with 83k miles and my 12 SR5 with 150k miles last summer for $14k each. Both trucks run, ride, drive and handle as good or better than my 2016 did. As stated earlier be patient. Expand your search area and criteria. Personally I would fly 1,000 miles to drive home the best deal. In that case you simply pay $100 to have the truck checked by an unbiased repair shop. Then you will have peace of mind in the condition. I have personally owned and service over 50 vehicles in my life. I think I bought 5 from dealers. Those were all new. I never buy used from a car dealer. I worked at 2 dealers early in my life and they only care about profit margin. I bet the $22.9k truck was either allowed $15k on trade in or was bought at an auction for $15k or less. Sorry for the rant.
