ECT question

I rarely use my ECT in my home state. Mostly use it when I go to WV to my property. I used it yesterday here in Joisey for giggles and discovered something new, or if not new, forgotten to me.

I drive in the S mode, S6. When I put the truck in ECT at a stop light and then took off as usual, upshifts were at a higher rpm as expected, but even at 65 mph I could not get the truck to shift into S6. My foot was light on the gas and the road was flat. Is this normal? In WV it's hard to tell, because you are either going up hill or down hill.

Thanks all for the help.

I use ECT when trailering my boat, helps hold the RPM longer on the gear for smoother power delivery. Or at least that's what I tell myself it's for.

I've also turned it on when I've got all seats occupied as it doesn't feel as bogged down.

How do you know you're not in 6th gear? Does ECT show the gear on the dash?

With Shift Sense Pro, I see the engaged gear all the time. You have to be going a little over 70 mph on a flat surface for 6th gear to kick in. Maybe just go a little faster than 65 mph, and see what happens.

It hard to tell if you are in S5 or S6. If I pull the shifter down into S5, there is no increase in rpm. If I leave the transmission in S6 and shut off the ECT, the rpm drop.

I'll try S6 with the ECT and a bit over 70 mph the next chance I get and let you know. Thanks for your help.

The other thing I notice with "shifting" is a mild downshift sensation when there is no change in the gear showing on the instrument cluster. Most noticible going up hill. Again, SSP alway shows the gear the truck is in.

We talked about this before. But the 3rd gen Tacoma has an Atkinson set up that affects the pistons/compression vs older versions. Please excuse me. I'm not an engineer so my terminology is clunky (kinda like the shifting :)).

Anyway, my point is that the engine will not only downshift, it also goes back and forth between Atkinson and Otto piston/compression. Since I see when there is a gear shift, there are many time when I clearly feel a mild downshift but no change in the gear that is showing on the dash.

I think the truck not only has 6 gears but also another 3 power options between 3, 4, 5th gear. These are the gears where I experience this effect.
