87 before the blower and now 91 is required for the blower. Tacomas only need 87 octane since it's not a high performance engine. Octane rating is not dirt content.

When I run 87 on my truck, the engine is a bit more noisy. I just start using 89 to play safe.

Supercharger/blower forces more air into the engine to make more power. Higher octane fuel is needed so the air/fuel mixture doesn’t ignite early.

I have a 4.0. The 3.5 has port and direct fuel injection which in turn runs even safer on 87.

Mazda Skyactiv technology...engine has 13.0:1 compression ratio would would normally cause fuel low octane fuel (87) to detonate but direct injection keeps the fuel out of the combustion chamber until the very last possible moment.

Well the gas grade was a combination of half a tank 87 and half a tank of 89.

Depending on your state, higher octane fuel will only return better mileage because it has less or no ethanol content. In CA, all gasoline from the pump has 10%. Still, running high octane fuel in a engine that only needs low octane can sometimes reduce power.
