How does the 4-wheel drive work?

Coming from a 2001 F-150 4x4, how does the Tacoma 4 wheel drive engage. I know the dash board switch, but does the truck need to be stopped? Do the front axle have hubs that "spin out" when 4 wheel drive is engaged? Do I need to do anything special when I disengage 4 wheel drive?

You can be rolling when going into 4H. But stopped and in N for 4L. But I always stop just to be safe. Disengaging is easy. You don't have to do anything.

You just need to be at less than 62mph, and it will engage/disengage with the dashboard switch. No locking hubs.
You do have to stop to engage/disengage 4LO.

Thanks. This a big improvement over the ford hub system. The shifter to engage 4 wheel drive in my last truck was too difficult for my wife to engage. She really likes the rotary switch. In fact my wife likes this new Tacoma better than her 2012 Grand Cherokee

If you ever disengage with switch but your truck still in 4 wheel drive just drive in reverse for 10 feet or so then that will take care...

I've never really needed my 4x4, so just engage it occasionally to keep it working well. My only gripe is, cornering at very slow speeds

I experienced the turning as well. Do not drive long distances in 4-wheel only to keep everything in working order. Thanks for the info, very helpful.
