Inner tie rod replacement

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had input on whether it’s necessary to hold the rack with a wrench when removing/torquing the inner tie rods? I’ve seen the TRQ parts YouTube channel just take a pipe wrench and turn it against the resistance of the pinion shaft but I’m question if this is safe and won’t damage the rack/pinion. Any thoughts or experience on this?

Alignment shops have been doing it for years just turning those tie rod ends once they unlock the tie rod jam nut. No need to overthink this.
 
Same thing, once you crack loose the inner tie rod jam nut before removing the outer tie rod castle nut. I did the rack on my 2001 tundra plus installed new outer tie rod ends. Its so super simple.

Yes you should hold that rack with opposing tool from twisting

Have you seen any timmy toolman vids on this procedure?
 
The rack mounts will hold the rack in place while you remove the inner tie rod clamp/and boot. There's washer inside the boot that locks the rod from coming unthreaded that you need to remove first before unthreading the rod from the rack. Once the new rod is fully threaded in place using a new washer, it needs peening over to stop the new rod from turning. The rest is simple, just reverse what you took apart It's very straight forward, no special tools are needed. A large pair of channel locks will do most of whats needed. A 12 year old can figure it out.
A new steering rack generally comes with the inner tie rods already in place...all you need is the outer sections if bad. At least thats how the my tundra's rack came.

There's washer inside the boot that locks the rod from coming unthreaded that you peen over the new washer once the tie rod is threaded in place. It's very straight forward, no special tools are needed.
Yes but when you crank on that, you aren’t turning against the rack mounts directly. You are turning against the pinion shaft. The rack more or less floats in the rack housing other than a pressure spring in the back to hold the rack against the pinion. The only thing stopping the rack from spinning is the engagement into the pinion. Seems like this could cause damage torquing against that.
 
When was the last time you changed one? There's zero risk, if you've ever changed an inner tie rod how I mentioned unless you're stoned, or drunk. Its basically childs play.
 
I had put a whole new OEM rack onit seem more sense to make it

Those itr rack ends were indeed included in new part
 
If the truck has high mileage, or a rack thats leaking as the one on my tundra...it's a no brainer to just install a new rack. Installing a new rack is a little trickier so everything lines up, than simply replacing an inner tie rod.
 
I bought a new oem toyota rack, plus 2 new steel lines to the power steering pump, and a pair of new tie rod ends. Was close to $1k in total for parts after a discount. Old rack was all steel, and rotted through. The new upgraded toyota rack was made of aluminum. All in all the installation was fairly easy unlike a tacoma.
