issues with 2016 Tacoma

Taco cruiser I believe you are stating what has been told to you by the regional rep. I am just wondering if he is lying to you about this. I believe you stated he looked for the software update to be ready by the end of January. Its now Feburary and there still isnt an update. Wonder what he would have to say if you called him again.

hey guys,i have read many posts but this is my first time posting anything. i have a 2016 trd sport manual with 1000k or 1 week and just noticed something strange when driving for first time in bumper to bumper traffic 0-20k.while i am aware of a momentary rev hang when first releasing the throttle fuel is cut off the revs then drop to idle were fuel is then opened.but i have noticed when revving to only around 2600rpm revs drop slower as if fuel was not cut off.this makes down shifting difficult and useless as engine braking is gone especially going down hill and even more strange is when revving to around only 1800rpm its fine.600-1800 good 1800-2600 bad 2800 and up is good.this happens in gear or out. next Wednesday service appointment.wondering if any of you auto trans guys noticed any thing like this. just upgraded from 4by2 taco starting to regret it.

That's probably the dashpot effect. My '15 Taco is an auto so I have no issue like you. But, my '12 Mustang was a manual and it would hang at high RPM's to the point that you had to wait seemingly forever for the revs to drop so you could finish an upshift. It was like someone else had their foot on the gas and you basically just had to powershift it when you wanted to make it hustle. It would get rubber in 3rd gear when the revs would hang at 7,000 like that and there was nothing you could do about it with the stock computer.

Again, the dahspot effect is for emissions and I doubt Toyo will do anything about it since they designed it in there in the first place. Maybe an aftermarket computer could solve this, but then you have the warranty to consider.

yes thank you WiskyT ,looked it up in modern tbwire the ecu hangs the throttle momentary for extra burn, different manufacturers have it in varying revs on all makes.bummer if laziness didn't kill the manual this will .
thank you for your response

Dude, seriously, lighten up. First of all, I don't have any issues. I have a '15 and it's fine. Second, the info you are relating doesn't pass the smell test. There are numerous complaints about different problems and somehow they are all getting muddied into one problem that has two fixes.

Excessive shifting is different than "lurching" or not going into Drive etc. Excessive shifting is by design. Engines run more efficiently at a fixed RPM. In order to keep the engine at it's optimum RPM, the trans will shift constantly. It's why all vehicles are coming with more and more gears or an infinite number of gears known as a CVT. If Toyo simply plugs in different shift parameters, it WILL CHANGE the miles per gallon and emissions. The EPA WILL NOT ALLOW this without re-certifying the model. Can this be done? Maybe. First, Toyo would have to find a way to meet the EPA standards while improving the drive-ability. If they could have done this easily, they would have made the trucks like that in the first place. Then, they would have to run the truck through the EPA certification process and then update the computers on the trucks.

This is happening all across the board with consumer products. 15 years ago, I got a new dishwasher. The thing was great. No matter what you through in it, the dishes came out spotless like a commercial. 4 yeas later, I bought a new house and spec'd out the EXACT SAME DISHWAHER down the the last digit on the model number. Guess what? It sucks. It's noisy and if you don't wash the dishes by hand first, they come out dirty. Being under warranty, I got the manufacturer out to the house to "fix" it. Guess what? You can't because it's working properly. In the time between the first and second washers I bought, the EPA changed the standards and now they pretty much have to use no water or electricity.

It's like the 1.6 gallon toilets. Some asshole in Washington 20 years ago decided that toilets using water was bad, and now you have to flush the damn things 3 times.

As for low trans fluid, how the effe could people who assemble precision engine components not be smart enough to figure out how to fill the proper volume of trans fluid? Why are they not adjusting the fluid level when an owner comes in with a complaint? Notice how many posters are still having shifting problems even after getting fluid level adjusted?

So yeah, they could change the shift points with an update and it probably wouldn't take 5 minutes to come up with the new code if they don't already have it, but that is basically what VW did. They used one configuration to pass the EPA tests, and then sent a different one out on the road to make the customers happy. Keep in mind how likely the EPA is going to be to help Toyo. The govt went after Toyo tooth and nail over the BS sudden acceleration crap and tried to run them out of business while helping GM cover up the ignition switch problem that has resulted in something like 30 deaths. Toyo is GM's biggest competitor. Toyo is a non-union company. GM is UAW and owned by obama and his chronies. The govt isn't going to do anything to help Toyo dominate GM.

Best Post on this thread, full of down to earth common sense.

I have actually have a meeting with him on the 18th at the local dealership
Thank you for the updates here. You must have a really good relationship with Mr. Rill to have his phone numbers. I recently had my 2016 Tacoma into a local Denver dealership for the transmission problems and a buzzing vibration coming from the exhaust manifold in certain RPM ranges that resonates into the steering wheel, gas pedal, and floorbed. It also resonates audibly into dash components. It took a month just for the dealership service manager to even get Mr. Rill to call him back! After over a month, they got a hold of Mr. Rill and I finally met with him at the dealership. He said he is the regional Field Technical Specialist for the Colorado Front Range. While he was primarily interested in the vibrations and spent most of his time riding with me to evaluate that, we also talked about the transmission problems. He was able to replicate every issue. But all I got from him was a "hmm, maybe these are normal characteristics?" Not a word about any software updates. Since then, I haven't heard anything about any of the issues he came out for. Just a "we're taking the next steps to evaluate the vibration problem" from a Toyota case manager who has been talking to him. They wouldn't elaborate beyond that. Not doubting he told you about an update, but I just find it interesting the differing treatment and responses from the same employee. I hope this all works out and they indeed resolve these issues.

So your basing your beliefs on the first year model?
Nah If you knew me you'd understand! I got 2.5 million miles plus behind the wheel not as a Big Rig driver. But, one who's owned 21 vehicles. Built an 05 Duramax with 793 HP at the rear wheels! Loved that crew cab! Just wanted better fuel economy driving my Taco 1800 miles this week! I'm going to be 100% commission in two months and fuel will be on me! I've never bought a new vehicle in a model year change!

I assume he found out his service rep. had lied to him and there is no software update. Now he won't come on here to say that thinking he will get the biz from us for being so positive about the update.
