issues with 2016 Tacoma

Hey Ya'll! I am new to this forum, so this is my first time posting on here. In November of 2015, I bought my 2016 Manual Tacoma TRD Sport. Some of you were mentioning issues with transmission, and after my first service appointment today, I figured I would shed some light on an issue I was having.

I noticed that when I was in 4th, 5th, and 6th gear, I was having an issue with shifting out of those gears (it seemed very hard to shift, and I had to jam it to get it out). This is the 4th vehicle I have owned that is a manual, and based off of my past experiences, I noticed something was not right. As such, I took my Tacoma in today for service, and left with a rental. They informed me that there is a synchronizer issue with the manual transmission on my, and that they were going to have to replace the entire transmission. The dealer informed me that this is something that Toyota is well aware of, and has since fixed the issue.

So, for anyone out there with a manual transmission, and are having issues with shifting out of gears, I would certainly take it into the dealer ASAP!

Still waiting on Taco cruiser to inform us about his Feb 18th appointment. I am sure he comes here everyday and not giving us the update he promised.

I wouldnt want to update the thread either. Seems like everyone just wants to bash tacocruiser anyways. Just my opinion tho. And i know my opinions are worth little. Lol

I dont want to bash him its not my style but he stated he would let us know about his Feb 18th meeting and he hasnt. There is no shame to come back here and state that the rep. lied to him of that is the case.

I opened a case with Toyota special care. I explained the general concerns about the auto transmission in the V-6. I had an agent look into any potential updates on the 2016 transmission. None are in the works. I put in a request into the specialists (engineers) to look into it. The agent said we all need to open a case to make a difference. Google Toyota support & help make a difference if you can. I have a 2016 Limited.

Tacocruiser, I have to say i am very disappointed with you not given us an update. Looks like you were wrong and now you do not have what it takes to say the info on the update that you have so strongly said was coming is not happening.

Not having that issue on my 2016 (built Nov 15'). It downshifts in cruise for hills and headwinds and goes right back to the highest gear it can. Note that 6th being a second overdrive is a VERY tall gear. The slightest hill or headwind will cause a downshift. If you raise your vehicle, increase the tire size, add any wind resistance (rack assy. or headwinds) or add load, it won't be able to hold 6th gear. Yesterday I had 4 adults for the first time driving 65 in mild rain and 6th with the extra weight and rolling resistance of the water wasn't happening. (There was no wind). I was still achieving 21mpg in 5th. My truck has the 2 to 3 second slow-shift-to-drive problem when cold. Fluid level is perfect. Waiting on Toyota to speak.

I am new to the forum, I have just bought a 2016 Tacoma was just built. I have a couple of questions of issues that are occurring. Initial start up, sometimes it cranks for a while before it starts, or cranks until it stops (timer on the button?) and I try again it has always started the second time. It doesn't do it all the time. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

I have button start too. Always has started on first push.

If it's like my wife's Honda, you have to keep your foot on the brake until the engine is fully lit. Once you come off the brake, it stops cranking.

You also don't need to hold the button in. Just hold the brake and press and release the button. If that doesn't start it then something is wrong.

Have not noticed this yet but i just bought my dbl cab v6 4x4 two weeks ago an ive been noticing a relay when shifting gears and also as i come to a stop and accelerate again, the truck seems to be jumping into nutral and slams back into drive with a harsh shift. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Dealership says the problem is a solenoid sticking and wants to replace the whole transission. The truck is only two weeks old. I bought a brand new truck so i wouldnt have to be dealing with fixing everything all the time. Truck is only two weeks old. Trying to get another one.

Thank goodness it's not just me. I had a hard time looking through forums finding anyone with this problem. Sorry to hear about your luck, but your post may have helped me out. The same thing is happening to my truck. My dealership said they reset the computer (since the truck trans learns/adjust to your driving habbits) when I picked it up today. It did not fix the problem. After the transmission is warmed up, I get harder shifts between 1-3 with less gear slamming so to speak. Also, when my truck is still cold and I back up, when I go from reverse to drive, sometimes it hesitates and then slams into gear... really strange. I left a Dodge RAM because of quality issues and it looks like the Gremlins followed me over to my White TRD Off Road-6ft bed.

I have been having an issue when the truck is cold and I backed from my driveway and put it in D , there is a delay in the transmission of about 2 secs to go into gear. I was told the ATF could be low due to having a tow package which requires more fluid than those without it, I am taking the truck tomorrow to the dealer to be checked out. About the software update , there is no such a thing per the south florida regional manager and master mechanics (friends of mine ) that i have talked to. I even called toyota a couple of days back and talked to a technical engineer and he told me that at this point there is no software updates for any trim in the tacoma lineup.
Sorry for the bad news

I'm having the same issue as well unfortunately. I got my truck back this morning and I was told the transmission fluid was fine. My truck was still having the same issue on the drive home.

Here's what I posted to another post:
