Dropped my Tacoma off this morning at dealership to have it checked out . It’s been shifting and surging. Can’t hold a highway speed very well without downshifting all the time. I live in illinois so the roads are flat! Dealership told me since I put different tires on that is what is causing the issue and not covered by warranty! The tires are 265/70/16. Called Toyota just a bit ago and lady said the same thing! I refused to settle at that. Asked to talk to the main supervisor. Suppose to call me back by the end of the day. This will be the 2nd time they screwed me over! 1st time was my 2009 tundra bed was rusting. Denied my claim.... so I upgraded to a 2016 tundra. Months later they came out and said there was a problem with rust on the beds. Hope this gets settled ! Otherwise done with Toyota! Sorry guys had to vent [emoji3]

First off that is NOT a tire issue. That sucks they are giving you crap over 270’s when stock size are 265’s.
And it is covered under warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Act says otherwise. The only thing not covered by an aftermarket product is: the actual aftermarket product itself and any item that becomes broken/defective due to the product.
Last time I checked tires didn’t screw up a transmission....
There have been TSB’s for this and ECM recalibrations that were supposed to address these “shift feeling enhancement” issues. Has your truck had the TSB’s addressed?
You’re doing the right thing man. Keep calling till they fix it!

FWIW, the surging and down shifting has gotten a ton better in mine to where it is barely even noticeable since it has some miles on it.
Have you tried to drive with ECT engaged to see if there was a difference?
Also, there is a device called the shift sense pro that puts the shift points at a higher speed range. The diagram shows our Tacoma’s current shift points and the difference after a shift sense is added.

265/70/16 is a stock tire size. SMH. They don’t know what they are talking about and are just trying to dickary you. Lots of what @Bogunn said +1 here too. I’ve been complaining about the shifting and they never once said it was my tires and I have 285/75/16 on it. My truck was shifting like that all the time and then I had the latest greatest TSB on the transmission and it started holding lower gears at high RPMs. I don’t know what’s more annoying.

Yes it has TSB work done already. Etc button does seem to help. I was just hoping to get something on record with them about the transmission issues we are having. Hoping they come up with a fix? Was thinking it was going to turn into a denied warranty claim!

It’s good. The more of us that bring this issue all the way to corporate the better chance we have of getting a fix.
 
One more time Toyota turns its back on the consumer. I think it is Toyota’s arrogant attitude that is causing me more heartburn than the actual transmission issues. Otherwise the Tacoma is a great truck. It is no wonder the truck needs to gear down to climb a hill and/or maintain a constant speed going into a breeze. Sixth gear is .58. Fifth gear in the third gen is more like fifth in the second gen.
 
I've had this "surging" issues since my truck was new. The trans is shifting down to 1st when coming to a stop and will move around a bit when stopped and the AC or defrost is on. Just something you get used to.

The constant shifting is definitely an issue but this what happens with these new multi speed transmissions. They can make it better but it's Toyota and all of their products are flawless.o_O

No worries Brandon, you have a legit gripe with Toyota corporate as many do, & it does get tiring listening to the talking heads at stealerships give their bland explanation of things (that almost always is wrong)

That tire size is pretty much stock, 1st gens came with 265/75/16 (years '01-'04) & 31.5"x10.50"x15" for earlier 1st gens. , I know you have a 3rd gen but point is that explanation they give is 100% bullshit (which you'd expect from salesmen)....

I sound like a broken record , Toyota should've quit trying to extract 6 (6+?) speeds out of automatics with 6cyl. engines, you just are not going to get shifting stability with engines void of a deep powerband.

Some here have gone to aftermarket fixes (get with @Bogunn about this) to get things working better, & if you can't get any better results from dealer then not only should you walk away from Toyota but I would encourage it...

It saddens me to say that there's probably better choices out there... ( I'm a 'yota fan & can't believe I just said that)...

Enough complaints and they eventually listen. It might not be until the gen4 comes out though.
 
sadly, you have not had poor warranty service, unless you have had a Ford. They are penultimate "not my fault" sayers.

Our closest Toyota dealer had a young service writer transfer from their Ford dealership, he had the audacity to tell me the gap between the carpets in my New 08 Tundra was normal, "all Ford's are like that". I told him "if I wanted fu**ing Ford quality I would have bought one" and told him further that I wanted to speak with his supervisor, before I left the dealership. The sup. found me, apologized and ordered new carpets for the truck.

$185 for the shift sense. $769 for the OV Tune. Agreed that overall the OV Tune definitely offers a more encompassing package but the Shift Sense Pro offers a quick solution to the issue almost $600 less.
I haven’t seen many reviews for OV Tune. I’m sure their awesome though.
