Oil capacity

Okay this is the dipstick hopefully you can see it's almost perfectly on the full mark with 4.5 qts. This is 1,000+ miles since the oil change.
Did you get a new genuine dipstick that matches yer rigs VIN?

Like you, my dad 88 yrs old gave me his 2002 2WD SR5, Ext cab 2.4cyl 3 years, with 29,000 miles on it, he bought it new and sealed in his garage driving it 1500 miles per year, its like new. I had just put 300,000 miles on my 95 T100 and loved getting a lower mileage Tacoma. I have been changing oil in my cars for 50 years. Mine holds 5.8qts with filter, like all the manuals I have read, I will check my dip stick to see if it looks likes yours. This may sound basic but, By chance do you buy oil in the large jug from Walmart, they are 5 qts, some other stores sell them in 4 qts capacity. If thats not the case, like earlier could it have gotten the wrong stick, have you always changed your our oil? this is fascinating delima.

Hey Taco Man, I have a 2000 Tacoma
Hi everyone,

I have a 2002 Tacoma base model with a 2.4l and an automatic transmission that I got from my dad who bought it brand new. Since I've owned it I've always changed the oil and filter myself and 4.5 quarts has always brought it to the full mark on the dipstick after starting the engine and letting it run. A few weeks ago I decided to take it to an oil change place and the guy told me their computer shows that it calls for 6 quarts, I told him that 4.5 always brings it up to the full mark. He said he'd check the dipstick and see what it says and it was full! I'm just curious if anyone else has this issue?? 6 quarts seems like a lot of oil for 4 banger to me, that's the same capacity that my old '93 F150 with a 5.0l had! Just curious though

Hey Tacoman,

Your not alone, I’m a novice when it comes to my Tacoma engine specs etc. But I have a small 2000 Tacoma srs, with the extra half cab. I have the same problem. Mine gets to the full line just under 5 quarts….. 4.8 is usually good. I hate changing oil myself because I’m lazy and it’s a mess but Sadly almost everytime I take it to a instant oil change, they pull up on the computer that it takes 6 quarts. Although I will tell every worker multiple times that’s working on it to fill to 4.8 and check, I think they just assume I don’t know what I’m talking about and fill to what the computer says. They must wipe the stick when they are showing me, because they show me that it’s good then I get home and check myself and even when the cars cool and sat overnight it’s still overfull on the dipstick by a half inch or more.
