Piston slap cold engine 2.7

03 Tacoma with 110000 miles that has developed what I have determined to be piston slap when engine is cold. First noticed it last winter and did not know what was going on then. If I start engine and take off with out a three minute warm up engine has a terrible hammer on acceleration. Once it is warmed up you can not make it to hammer no matter what you do. Summer time temperatures truck is ok. Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone I have determined that I will just live with it and give engine time to warm before take off. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

What oil are you running?

My 2009 Tacoma with a 2.7 started with a piston slap about four years ago. Each year it got worse. Only did it in the winter below 30°. And not at start up, it would idle quiet, but is soon as I put it in gear (stick) and let the clutch out, major rattle. This year it got so bad I was afraid I was going to destroy the engine if I didn’t let it warm up for 5 minutes before engaging the clutch. The vehicle has been over maintained using full synthetic 5W 20 its entire life and only toyota filters. This year I did changed the oil to a much thicker viscosity and the problem went completely away. When I went to 10 W 30 the problem is gone. 121,000 miles now
 
It may not be piston slap, but a tight wrist pin. Varnish builds up on the wrist pin and pin bore in the piston, preventing easy movement. When the engine warms up, the piston expands and the pin moves more freely.

I've used one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in a vehicle with that problem and run the engine for 100 miles, then drained and replaced the oil and filter. The problem went away and didn't return for the 4 years that I owned the vehicle. Engine flush would do the same thing.

Have you bore scoped it to see what the cylinder walls look like, as well as compression tested, or leak down testing.
