When the Army adopted the wearing of the flag on the right shoulder in 2002-3 under the combat patch we wore it with the union of the flag facing forward also.
Never retreating and always moving forward is a great way to remember proper flag etiquette. Plus, this is America. We don’t retreat or surrender. Bataan was the biggest defeat/surrender. After that and the abuse of Korean War POW’s the Code of the United States Fighting Force was adopted and is still in use today.
Never surrender of your own free will and make every attempt to escape if captured.
