Tonneau Recommendations?

Hi all,

I'm gonna be pulling the trigger soon on a 2018. I've been tonneau cover shopping and there are waaaaaay too many options to try and research effectively so I thought I'd try and go this route.

Here are my requirements:
- Hard tri-fold
- Weather proof (as best as possible)
- Doesn't need to be open to close the tailgate

What are your recommendations?

Bakflip MX4 if I was buying one. I have the OEM and I like it.

It’s a great cover. I’ve got the MX4 aluminum one and a bed mat. It will sometimes leak a little down the sides of the bed but not much. It’s leaked bad once and it’s because I didn’t close it all the way. I would recommend it if you want a tri fold hard cover that is low profile.

I just bought a bakflip MX4 about a month ago. Has been raining a lot in Vancouver (as usual). The cover leaks....not a lot, but water does come through. If u want to keep things dry with that cover, I’d put it in a plastic bin. Otherwise it’s a great cover. Keep in mind it’s not designed to be super secure....coat hangar could easily open it.

That’s the problem I’m having with that cover. It’s expensive (especially in our country) and it has a drainage system with drain tubes and still leaks. Something that expensive shouldn’t be leaking.

I’m looking into the Leer Trilogy x2t. The only downside is that you can’t yse the factory bed rails with it, but that information is from a few years ago so I’m not sure if things have changed or not.

That’s any cover. I’ve never had one that wasn’t completely water tight or secured. I can get into your truck or house in less than 30 sec. if I wanted to. The bakflip like you said “otherwise it’s a great cover” with any cover if you want the contents to be absolutely dry put them in a bin. I do.
 
I have the MX4 too and also get some water in the bed after heavy rains. Gotta wonder how much water the drain tubes remove. Ive had cardboard boxes back there driving through rain storms and the boxes were fine.
Plus one on using plastic totes. The deep rubbermaid ones fit perfect under the tonneau cover.
Definitely get a cover that still lets you use the rail system , it's very handy!IMG_20171225_1328134.webp
 
Personally I love mine and it’s not what you’re after. It’s a retractable tonneau cover from roll n lock. Have never liked tonneau covers that are hard top myself and it looks so much more stream lined with the vehicle. Plus if willing to spend a little more can be motorized

I have a undercover back flip I like it . But it just happens that I currently have bad leaks. It was installed by the dealer less then two years ago and only has two year warranty. there installation people filled a claim and said they would call me in a week. The rain in the Vancouver area is pure **** !
 
I just this week bought the Tige tri-fold soft top from amazon. Its only been 2 days but i really like it. Easy to install and very affordable
 
My wife stopped at a local cap and tonneau cover place were i have bought my last 2 ARE hard 1 piece covers from and the price was 1250 color matched in inferno orange they dont leak and lock seperate from tailgate

The problem I had with that one is how it opens and closes. You can’t have a bed full of stuff and close it, it requires space by the cab to open and close. If cargo shifts forward you won’t be able to open it without crawling under it and moving the cargo back.
 
The Peragon has the same issue as the retractable tonneau's in that it takes up bed space and I don't think I can afford to lose any given that it's a short box. Hard tonneaus restrict the amount of usable height (i.e. can't have an open bed) and I'm not that concerned about security because I won't be leaving anything valuable in the bed. I'm more concerned about water getting in.

Questions for OR17TRD and other MX4 owners:

1) Have you had to use caulking/RTV to reduce the leaking into your bed from the MX4
2) Do you think that people who complain a lot about the MX4 leaking have installed the cover properly or do you think its a manufacturers problem?

Some people have no issues/minimal issues with these covers and others seem to have a ton of problems, which is concerning. Having to use some sort of sealant for a purchased product to me is a testament to the fact that the product is not a good one, which is why I ask the question. That said, the MX4 seems to be one of the only covers that does what I want it to do. I looked at the G4 elite but I think the tailgate needs to be opened to close the cover. I'd buy the Leer trilogy asap if it didn't block the cargo rails.
