transmission compatibility

Hello friends I'm newbie to the forum obviously. got a 95 sr5 tacoma. 6cyl, 3.4L, 4x4, manual transmission. the latter of which is about finished. so I'm looking for another, transmission that is. As most of you probably know the 95's shifter for 4 wheel drive has button on it that you push to engage the 4x4. so i had a 01 tacoma years ago and got used to the fact that it didn't have a POS button and only a simple shifter. that couldn't short out at the most inopportune times. i know that there are other makes and models that the transmission's can swap over for. wha ti don't know is possibly which ones work the best and most importantly which ones are without the dumbass button. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean transfer case? You're engaging the front axle disconnect with the button vs the later ones would simply be triggered when you shifted into 4wd. So basically you would still have the axle disconnect with or without the button.
