Use of ECT in the Tacoma

All technical talk aside, I find ECT "enhances the driving experience ". Anyone ever do an economy comparison?
Mixed city/highway driving definitely enhances the experience and average is 1.5-2mpg better. In straight stop and go, it’s pretty sucky.

Can you switch “on the fly” or only when stopped?

I switch on the fly with no problem. I'll try using the ECT button on my return trip back to Joisey from WV at the end of this week to see what, if any mileage difference there is.

It's really meant for towing so it makes sense that it would keep the trans out of high gear to keep it from hunting which creates heat. It's in now way a performance enhancement to a non performance vehicle.
Exactly, the ECT mode only changes the performance (which IMHO people falsely interpret the word to mean Zoom-zoom) by keeping it slightly more in the torque vs. horsepower region AND improves the quality of the driving experience by keeping the trans from hunting (up) for better fuel economy when that just isn't going to succeed [as you haul or tow a load]. Under the conditions that warrant the use of the ECT setting, it just makes things less busy ("set your cruise control to xx and just be on your way"-less busy).

Just got back from a 4000 mile road trip. Used it in the hills to keep it from searching for the right gear. 36% freeway 64% secondary roads.
Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Yellowstone, Montana, Idaho Washington.

I'm not sure if I have an odd truck, but my truck upshifts all the way to 5th gear when in S6 and the ECT button is on. 2018 TRD off roadV6. Upshifts from a stop come on a regular basis, and perhaps 5 mph to 8 mph higher than the truck without ECT on and in S6 mode. The only hold out is when the truck shifts into S6, and in all of my driving in this mode, it will not happen under 56 mph with a light throttle on a flat road, or as close to flat as possible. Upshift into S6 happens just under 60 mph if you have any pressure on the throttle, but it does upshift into S6 using the ECT button.

Yeah, mine is the same way. Even though dash says S6 it won't go into 6th until you get up to speed and then breath it a little, then it will drop into 6th gear.

Strange thing about the S mode and the ECT button. I'm positive that my truck would not go into S6 when using the ECT button when it was newer. It has almost 9K miles on it now, it would not work when it had around 5 K miles. Strange. I'm going with haunted.

No, I think it was we wernt holding our tongues right or something. When you first started talking about this I tried mine and I thought ect just eliminated s6 but I wandered why dash would show s6 but not be in 6th, but I just accepted that. Then when you came back and said youres would go in s6 I thought well I gotta try this again. Damn, now it will go into 6th gear. Aliens, gotta be aliens. Ive got just over 6k miles on mine.
