VIN Number & Model Year Mystery

My 2017 was built in late September in Texas and delivered late October. Dealer said it was one of the last '17s they could get, so you could very well have an '18.
Do you have the 2018 model features like TSS (lane assist, radar cruise etc.)?

That’s a good point. A true 2018 would have all those features.

Very true

Mine is a 2016 4x4 sport and not one issue since I bought it in Apr 2016.
Do you live where there are mountains and big hills and do you use cruise control? That’s where most people have the issue. Also have you crawled under the truck and inspected the rear differential seal that is the other issue. Other than those two things there was little stuff like the whistling from the LCA, the wind noise from the door seals. The axle wrap, driveline vibrations and needle bearing have been issues since 2005 so people were upset about those still being issues.
Did you get all the TSB’s done or do you take the truck to be serviced at a Toyota dealer? I’ve heard of dealers just doing the updates and TSBs when you bring it in for the 5/10/15/20k miles services under the Toyota service agreement. Maybe your dealer had been fixing things over the past 2 years?
Maybe you got one that was made on a Wednesday after the plant had its catered lunch and everyone was happy.

Not a lot of hills here and definitely no mountains. I do use the cruise a bit and when there were TSBs on it I would take it in to get updated. I also crawled under it to check everything. Maybe the dealer did take care of it without telling me. I have no idea but the truck has been good to me.

I think that’s most of them. They are good trucks. I just got a Lemon. :(

We do have a lot of corn fields here. Atleast once a month I drive through a field. Maybe that’s been keeping it together for me.[emoji23]

Thank you all! This IS the best Taco site! Bogunn & TucsonSteve - you gentlemen solved it! Like Raeburn suggested, has to be one of the last built.

So my last follow up question to all of this is.....when does Toyota wrap up a model year of Tacoma production? Mine was built at the very end of October. Does it end in October? November?

I think that sales/manufacture generally go with a fiscal year. So manufacturing would be Oct. 1 and no later than Sep. 30.

Yeah, I just got back from Charleston SC. From there to Columbia SC, the transmission is fine (flat as pool table, almost). The rest of the way to Asheville (up and up we go), ShiftSense pro is better than OEM.

They don’t like hwy mountains.

This is anecdotal, but I think that at speeds not more than 65 mph there is much less and smoother downshifting compared to over 70 mph.
