2016 tacoma noise after lift?

There were no issues with the differentials and the noise never came back. I'm going to put a lift back on but I'm going to give it a bit before I do just to make sure the hum sound doesn't come back.

Just bought 2017 TRD OR DCLB drives great runs great no tranny issues like others no searching for gears or vibrations... yet. I had it lifted it with a 3" toyota approved revtek 40013 and the needle bearing started vibrating. The needle bearing vibrates at 30-40 mph. It's felt in the floor board and the steering wheel. It goes away in 4x4. Try the T-SB-0026-15. If Toyota put the lift on they will cover it under warranty. Or buy aftermarket bushing (identified as T8CS-Bushing) to replace the factory needle bearing its made by East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS)

So I have read a hundred of these and just want to share my story if it helps.. I bought a 2016 tacoma trd sport new from the dealer.. in the first hour i put a 3 inch front spacer and 2 inch rear space kit on it... almost instantly afterwards i had that humming/vibration issue... (also some suspension parts i definitely properly torqued loosened up and required tightening a little beyond factory spec)(as well as had to replace rear cast iron space blocks with fabricated steel blocks since the cast iron ones started to fracture).. turns out it is caused by the front driver side needle bearing inside the carrier.. East coast Gear makes a 400,000 mile rated solid oil infused bushing that replaces the stock needle bearing.. yeah kind of sketchy removing a bearing where a piece of metal would rotate in and put in a solid bushing- although i realized we got Oil lite bushings at work and they have duty cycles much more intense than a measly passenger truck... What you should definitely do is drop the front diff even though it only lowers 0.3786 inches or something around there- because every big counts... Then use their specialty tool to pull out the needle bearing to replace with solid bushing... noise and issue will go away.. The bushing is longer to take care of float control while driving.. Just monitor and replace your front diff fluid every 15-20 k or so... its very easy to do easier than an oil change thats for sure... Things i asked ECG supply about was how do i remove the bushing once installed...?-> they said i would have to drop and split the carrier out of the vehicle and drive it out from the back, though it should last the life of the vehicle... I did this all and just put only 1000 miles on the truck with no issues what so ever... smooth again.. hope this helps i will update after some hard miles are put on.. my questions are is there anything i should be doing to the rear shocks or front sway bar links/ sway bar mounts?

It's a vibration here and there in gas peddle and a hum sound coming from below me. Which isn't constant but when it starts it is at 30mph and has continued at 60mph. I did have some confirmation from another person that it sounds like bearings going out. They looked at my lift and being it's the pucks and everything is actually toyota parts they didn't believe it was the lift. They also checked the drive lines and said angles were dead on as well as the alignment. When they took it for a drive they could hear the hum sound around 20mph.

I thought I was going crazy. You hit the issue with my 2016 TRD Sport. I had a Ready Lift leveling kit put on, this is when I started noticing the vibration. It starts between 30 and 40 mph and then again between 60 and 75 mph, felt worst at 35 and 65/70. I've taken it back to the shop that installed the kit twice, the second time the mechanic was able to hear the vibration. I'd really hate to take the kit off but I think I'm going to end up pulling the trigger on that one.

It's the needle bearing. Get the ECGS bushing installed and be done. Toyota won't do anything for you if the lift wasn't installed by them. You can try and if the service guys are awesome you could get lucky and have them fix it. But... Not likely.

To check if it's the needle bearing for sure put it in 4wd and drive at the speed when it usually hums. 30-40mph. It should drive smooth no hum. Turn 4wd off and it will start humming again.
Funny you say that OR17TRD, the mechanic that installed the kit called me today and had me do exactly that and it did exactly what you said. In 4WD nice and smooth/quite, as soon as I put it back in 2WD, I only got the vibration at 60 mph very faintly. It eventually went back to its normal occurrence though. Thanks, I'm kind of upset I hadn't joined this forum sooner. Everything I've been experiencing with my COMA is here, experienced by many others!

Same problem here. Icon/old man emu lift on my 16 trd sport. 24k miles. Took it in to the dealer despite knowing the lift wasnt installed by them...and they did the fix no questions asked. I even have wheel spacers. One of the reasons I keep taking my trucks to this dealer. Service is great and they have popcorn, lattes, and a fountain drink machine for customers. :) they told me the bearing was upgraded/updated but we shall see.... Never had this problem on my 06 and it had an identical lift. 200k on that one. I wonder if it was a bad lot of needle bearings that were installed from the factory?

Maybe. Especially since not all trucks will get it.
Welcome to the forum.

I’m so glad I found this post. New member as well! 2016 TRD/OR with 3-1 level kit on it since day 1. Noise didn’t start until 54k-ish miles.

Funny part of this is that my wife was driving it while her car was in the shop after the hurricanes hit Florida recently. I told her she’s a magnet for vehicle troubles and she’s buying the ECGS bushing for me LOL!

Anytime you modify the ride height from stock on these trucks, especially these later gen3's, its not going to be cheap to do it right.

Btw waterboy, don't blame the wife for this issue, sooner, or later it would of happened to anyone.

My buddy and I did mc RC 3.5" on my 2016 TRD OR on a weekend in 2021. No funny noises then or now.

Back in 2020 I helped a fishing buddy of mine put a 3'' rc lift in his 2019 trd or with big ass tires. He cheaped out not buying the longer a-arms to compensate for the lift, and prevent vibration issues that happened to his truck afterwards. Wasn't long before the cv axle needle bearing failed, then later the boots ripped. He had some serious vibration issues at different speeds to, then blamed toyota for building a crappy truck. The last straw was seeing how well my 2020 stock access cab performed compared to his. He ended up trading his tacoma in for a new frontier. At least now he's been a happy camper.
