Zero W Thirty

I changed oil to a 0W30
In short it's better, but advantages occur under conditions that don't occur 12 months a year
The north country zero and below is common wile 5 w 30 works well any way .
0W30 starts motor even better & even feels smoother ( if it's even possible )
So for cold starting 5W30 is fine ....... 0W30 is king .
I found with MPG
My Tacoma gets great MPG on the HWY I can pull from 27 to 28.8 depending on how relaxed I drive
If I go 55 to 60 I will get 28.8 fully warmed up 0w30 or 5w30 same MPG
Short trip cold weather 0 W 30 blows 5w30 out the door
during the summer I'll put in $20 & drive all over (many miles)
at one point I say heck I drove alot for $20 ,that is during the summer
As the winter cool rolled in I was noticing Gas MPG was BAD like $10 per day I had a hunch
and the hunch was short trip cold so I excepted it .( thats winter I figured ) .
Now with 0W30 I put in $20 and getting that same MPG as summer I'm at day 3 still have plenty of fuel
0W30 is fantastic for short trip cold weather use .
Most likely this will be the oil I use year round
unless I notice an issue during summer
So till further notice Mobil one 0 w 30 is my oil

What you are stating.
The 2016 and 2017 Tacoma manufactures suggestion for OEM oil is 5w30 and the 2018 with the same engine is 0w20?
What’s up with that?
Beats me. That's what the 2018 says to feed it with. Didn't know 16 and 17 were different...

Maybe it's a regional thing? I'm in Southern Idaho... 20171228_153255.jpg

2008 calls for 5w30 and 0w30 - meets that spec at the most important area ,normal warmed up running conditions as 30 weight
at start up running zero weight has to lend to less motor wear & it is a 30 weight when needed
If 2018 calls for 0W20 ,it's the 20 weight aspect you have to wonder about If Toyota tightened up the tolerances then a 20 weight is needed
it's said the engineers do the test's - invest the money .& what they recommend is best .
The real news of requiring a 0 w 20 is auto manufactures have crossed the divide
Zero weights are best gracefully formulated with synthetic
or at least synthetic blend , conventional oil is being replaced
this is just the beginning
future oil requirements are heading
for 0 w 16 and even 0w8
I suspect some day maybe in 10 years , mentioning synthetic will not be necessary as it will just be the Norm & The only way to make it for the application
But the future will be listed as the term GROUP and a higher
group number, equals a more refined base stock .
Group 4 as well as 5 is a pure synthetic
and anything below that is truly not a synthetic oil,
but Group 3 Base oils are allowed to be called synthetic

IMO if it calls for 0w20 use it
hot weather 5w20 would logically be ok

If anyone lives in southern Missouri, I get synthetic 0w20 for free. Only 2-3 gallons of leftovers at a time when I haul it.

As best I can tell, the 4.0 specified 5W-30, the 3.5 specifies 0W-20. For what it is worth, the 5.7 in the Tundra specified 0W-20 from its intro in 2007.

Well I can't stress this to much it's around zero and 12 degree highs . My short trip Gas Mileage is fantastic What I suspect now is
trips of 10 to 15 miles in winter is short trip as engine is warmed up proper after 10 to 15 miles till it is warmed up nice a five weight has more resistance then zero weight
I can't see how in summer a zero weight will add any fuel MPG gain
but who knows For sure Mobile One 0w30 is no snake oil

Well a warm spell and just about 60 compared to last weeks below zero .
0W30 is fast becoming the only oil ill ever use , smooth as silk I gotta say
Holy Crap is the 4.0 smooth

My over all view of the 0w30
if your auto calls for a - 5 / 10 w 30 you can use 0w30 & particular cold north territory will benefit
if 0w price was same price of 5w I'd use it all year but I see no need to spend $6 more for a synthetic 0w in summer
when a 5w synthetic works as well for the warm weather . So my ritual will be
Synthetic 5w for April to Nov and Dec to March 0w
At 5000 miles the oil change lite kicks on as I approach 6000 miles I change
240,432 miles at this point

I hope I get 240k out of mine..

I put on 21,000 since last year -
This year I needed 2 Tires
one carry bearing
and one strut

Had lots of snow this year - No problem for the Taco
ALSO
I took on a 4 mile back road during a melting and unexpectedly hit mud for 3 miles
it was rubbing the bottom of chassis ,
I had my daughter with me and she kept saying are we gonna be OK
I said Sure ;) wile I was white knuckled holding on for life
and hunched over the steering wheel to get the best look of the road
it floated over the mud , I was worried that I could get stuck but the 4.0 easily kept up the speed about 35 to 40 MPH
I made sure to keep moving . The next day I went back in the daylight to see what I survived . Then I saw a truth
year 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Stuck up to it's Axel
My conclusion the Taco's long wheel base with light weight 2000 pounds less then the Dodge
just floated over the Mess .
I bet these Taco's with REAL Mud /snow tires are unstoppable
